_______

Could any of you confirm for me, please?  Samuel Quaife 1805, see below, is the son of Samuel Quaife 1779 & Mary Badcock, not Edward Ned Quaife 1769 & Mary Ann Waters?

On 26/6/1827 in Catsfield, Samuel Quaife 1805, married Harriet Crouch, born 1804 in Vinehall, Sussex.  Mary Crouch & Walter Quaife were the witnesses.

They had 7 children born in Catsfield: John Quaife christened 2/12/1827, Spenser Quaife christened 6/6/1830, Sarah Jane Quaife born 1833, died 1880 in Battle Union House, Battle, Sussex, Horace Quaife christened 15/1/1837, Eldred Quaife christened 5/4/1840, Ansley (Audley) Quaife 11/6/1843, Amos Quaife  christened 9/8/1846.

The 1881 Census shows Samuel Quaife, a general labourer age 77 born in Catsfield, Harriet Quaife age 78 born in Vinehall, their Son-in-law James Stubberfield, a general labourer age 41 born in Bexhill, their daughter Audley (Ansley) Stubberfield age 38 born in Catsfield, their Grandson Horace Quaife (Stubberfield), a general labourer age 18, born in Bexhill, all living in 22, Whitefriars Road, Hastings, St Mary in the Castle.

Thanks,

Peter.

________

On 22/8/1831 in Catsfield, Robert Quaife 1808 married Mary Ann Adams, born c1815 in Catsfield. Sussex.  Walter & Hannah Quaife were the witnesses.

It's likely Robert would have asked his BROTHER Walter to be the witness, rather than a distant cousin, so this implies Samuel Quaife 1779 & Mary Badcock are the parents of Walter Quaife 1800, married to Hannah Crouch.

What do you think?

Best Wishes,

Peter.

Yes I found your website-that's how I knew we were researching the same family. I hope to learn more
about William Quaif/Quaife in the coming year. All I know at this point is that he was born in England and
his wife Hanna was born in New York.

 Hello Linda!

I can't tell you how excited I am to hear from  you!!! You are the first person that has even been able to link Jerome to their family. Now you have supplied his parents names!! This is fantabulous!!!

I am going to head right over to Ancestry.com to  look up your family tree!

Yes, I have remarried. I was married to Dan Quaife,  son of Chester and Dorothy Bjork Quaife. We have three children  together and remain close  friends. I am doing this research for the children as well as myself as I  fell in love with the Quaife line during the 17  years that Dan and I were  married.

I look forward to hearing from you and sharing anything that I have.

 Thanks again!

Dear Kathy,   I think I can help you out.  My  husband's grandmother was Mildred Louise Quaife daughter of William Jerome Quaife and Lillian Leona Crosiar.  Williams' father was Jerome Kinion Quaife & Jerome's first wife, Eliza Nettlingham.  Eliza's sister, Sarah was Jerome's second wife.  It was Sarah and their daughter Mary who had the accident in horse drawn buggy and drowned. Jerome's third wife was Mary Drummett. His fourth wife was Cora Seymour. Jerome's parents were William Quaif and Hanna Thompson.  I have not updated my information yet since I'm just starting to research William Quaif and Hanna Thompson. This genealogy has been supplied and verified by the La Salle County Genealogy Guild in Illinois. My family tree (SUTTON FOLK FAMILY TREE) will be updated hopefully in 2006. It is located at Ancestry.com.  Have you remarried since I see your name is listed as Dickinson and not Quaife or Watson?  I hope I have been of some help.
  Sincerely, Linda Folk

A few things on your webcite are wrong.  My name is Rachel Young, and i'm the daughter of Connie Quaife, who is the son of Dale Quaife.  The cronical order of Dale and Patty Jo's children is Incorrect, also they had four daughters, not three.  If you would like to email me for the other information please do, I thought your webcite was pretty cool but inaccurate.  thanks again

Hi,
I was wondering how we might be related.  My father is Jerry, if you didn't know that already.  I am sorry, but I don't know who you are.
Lori
Good morning Lori,

Here is the fast version!

Your father Jerry was the son of Chester R. Edith Minnie (Newell) Quaife. They had  7 children: Chester Robert, Barbara, Lorraine, Phyllis, Eugene Jerry (your dad) and Dale.

Chester Robert was my father in-law when I married his son Daniel in 1980. Chester (sometimes he was called Bobby) married Dorothy Alice Bjork and they had five children: Gerrie Leigh, Darrel Leslie, Ronald Wayne Daniel Robert (my ex) and Jeffery Lawrence.

Daniel and I had three children together in our 17 year marriage and we remain good friends today. Our children are Amanda Lynn (now 23 yrs old), Daniel Robert Jr, (now 21 years old) and Holly Brieanne (now 19 years old.) Amanda was married in October of last year so she is now Amanda McKinley.

Daniel and I divorced in 1998 and he moved back to the family home in Minnesota. The children and I moved to Phoenix, Arizona where I remarried to Daniel Dickinson (Another Daniel!!!) and he and I have a two year old daughter named Emily Alexandria-Elizabeth.

I have always been fascintated by the Quaife family name and history. Several members of the family have been so very kind to me and helped with names, dates and the all important stories. I remember sitting in Lorraines kitchen waiting for her homemade noodles to be done just talking away. We also visited Barb and Forest in Missouri several times before Dan and I divorced.

The reason that I wanted to make this website was for my children, Amanda, Daniel and Holly. I wanted to do my part in preserving their family heritage. I love the Quaife's to death, but unfortunately not may of them took the time t preserve the richness of their heritage. Those that have, I have always found to be very kind about sharing their information. I'm not out to make any money or to embarrass anyone. I just want a place that the Quaife Name can call home. If you would like to share any information, then that would be wonderful. If you would prefer that I remove any information pertaining to you then I will do that for you right away. I don't want anyone to be upset by what is found here.

Thank you for writing Lori, and I do look forward to hearing from you again.

Kathy (Quaife) Dickinson

I just wanted to thank you for contacting me about your family.  I'm not sure if you know my story. I am second oldest married to Erv Michalak in 1981.  My children are Ervin 21, and Tiffany 19.  Dad was not sure how you were related.  Again thanks for the information.  Since Aunt Rainy passed away, the family has drifted farther apart.

Hello Cathy

My wife stumbled across your web site this week, it has been fantastic to read

Every now and then I would "Google Quaife" and usually come up with a famous cricketer, a clever firm that makes high performance gearboxes or the founder member of the Kinks. I wondered how closely I may be related to any of them . I joked with a friend that I should start up a web site called Quaife Reunited, exclusive for Quaife's to correspond and there you are having done that and more

My father gets a mention in your  letters section, I thought you would like some more detail. The letter starts "Hi Cathy Please find listed below my link to a branch of the Quaife family."

So My Father is Frank Melleville Quaife, His second marriage was to my mother Ivy May Oram,I am Neil Melville Quaife married to Claire Frances Graham, we have three children, Lewis Melville,Alice Frances and Mary May.

I was aware of the french connection of the Quaifes: It has been great to learn of the detail

I would be interested to hear from you or relatives direct in my Line

Kind Regards

Neil Melville Quaife

I'm not sure if I put my email address on the last email or that it went through. It is DrAugie33@hotmail.com. I'm interested in the information Otto Quaife said he had on one of your surveys but I know that he has since passed. If you could let me know if you know anyone who might have the
information he referred to please let me know. My relation is as follows: I'm the daughter of Roy Quaife, whose father is Harold, whose father is Charles Stephen, whose father is Stephen Quaife. If you have any questions for me or information you can email me.

Thanks again for your help,
August C. Quaife

Kathy my dear,I would love to have you use my information as you see fit and definitely put my address in it. You it galls me that some people in geneaology want to keep their own and their family data secret, Why bother with it in the first place, How are our ofspring going to know who is who, fifty years down the road they look and see "Oh I have a Grandma named LIVING"That t me is plain stupid.I know paricularly in England there are certain laws but if you give permission it is legal. Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery ,I dont know where you live but here in Ontario we are just now experiencing our first real days of

spring 20c after a horroneous winter.I too have my health problems ,bad lungs, can't do much, but i guess at 78 that is to be expected. I have only been at this stuff for 4 yrs,but whether it is pure luck or the Good Lord watching ober me I don't know but I have amassed a large collection of about 11 family trees, and it all started from my moms ancestors leaving behind a box of photos and notes of BDM.My mom was an Allen and it is 65 pages all the way back to Holland in 1600,s. Even found we are distantly related to Sir Winston Churchill and General George Patton on their wives side. So it is a small world.Just found out last week my GGGgrandmother on moms side goes back to an English Lord in 1500 England. Dad was English and his mother was a Dengate who married into the Quaife's,The Dengates go back to about 1500. Sorry to wander off on that when i get talking this subject i can't stop. Till the next time, Good luck and God Bless

I have been interested in my family history and found your website.  I read the survey from Otto Quaife but know that since that time he has passed away.  I am very interested in the information he said that he had, do you know who might have that information now?  I am the daughter of Roy Quaife, whose father is Harold, whose father is Charles Stephen, whose father is Stephen Quaife.

Thanks for your help,

Hello Kathy

Just wanted to say HI I would have sent you a mesg sooner but I have been in a lot of pain with the weather getting colder up here. It was so nice to get you email about the Quaifes it give me new hope knowing that there may be a family out there that I don't know about, I have always taught my 2 girls that family is the most important thing and since I have found your website and thinking that I might find more about myself because I know nothing about my fathers side other than the information that I have given you. Did you happen to find anything out? There is no hurry I have nothing but time. Thanks for what ever you can come up with.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Dave Quaife

Hi, I came across your site and found that my father had summited a photo of my Grandfather and him self. Would it be possible to add another photo to the collection? My father (Jim Quaife Jr.) does not seem to include many of the family members, and thats why I am asking to summit a photo of myself and if I can get a couple of the others together, then there will be a few of us. Please let me know.
Thanks, Mark Quaife

P.S. I left the link of my e-mail so it's easier.

Dear Mrs Dickinson,
I am doing some research into a Mrs Quaife, who was the daughter of the English poet Richard Lower, 1782-1865, and sister of the writer Mark Anthony Lower. Mrs Quaife - I don't know her first name - was a nurse in the Federal army during the Civil War.

Might she be one of your Quaife ancestors?

Yours Sincerely,
Amanda Foreman

Hello. I found your site the other day, and i was amazed to see a familiar story about the normans in the stories section!

My name's Georgina Quaife. I'm 16 and I live in Surrey, which is in south-east England. My father's name is Julian Quaife, my mother is Susan Quaife and I have two younger sisters called Jennifer and Stephanie aged 13 and 10 respectively. My father's family live in Downton, which is near Somerset, so it's more south west. There are also more Quaife's in the next town to us, and my mother has been in contact with them because she works in the doctors surgery where they are registered.

Well done on the site, and i hope to hear more from you.

Your faithfully, Georgina Quaife

Hello. I don't know if you remember me! But I'm Georgina Quaife from Surrey, I emailed you about your site quite a while ago! You've most probably heard of the Menin Gate in Belgium? It's got all the names of soldiers that died in the First World War but their bodies were never recovered. I visited Ypres, in Belgium, recently on an English Literature trip because our A-Level synoptic paper is based on the theme of World War One.On this trip, we went to watch the Last Post which takes place every evening. It's a very moving experience, and if you ever go to Ypres I suggest going to watch it. But back to the point! There are two Quaife names on the gate, and if I ever get our scanner working i'll send the picture to you. Both names are under the 'Privates' section of the East Kent Regiment, which is very close to Surrey. You've probably got all this information already, but I thought i'd email you this anyway!
Hope to hear from you again soon, Georgina

Thanks for responding. Howards Schott is my G-Grandfather, he married Myrtle Quaiffe. I have included the picture of thier headstone. (see attachment)

I also have the line of Schotts going all the way back to the Revolutionary war. I need help though, I have yet to find a paper link, linking Howard schott to his father Horace Schott. My grandmother says they are father and son, thus completing my familty tree. Also, see the tree line, number 73, which will also link us. But, I am trying to go futher. I am REALLY looking for another paper source to link Howard and his father Horace. If you know anything, let me know.

I have also included a .rtf document with my Schott line for your viewing pleasure. Please publish everything you can. You have my permission to use it all. Also, include my email address, as I am still seeking out people to exchange info with.

Check out the files, thanks.

Hi Kathy
Stumbled across your Quaife page while doing some searching on the Quaife name. My husband has Quaife ancestors from Sussex England. Walter Quiafe born cc1743 Catsfield Sussex married Mary Carpenter around
1768 Catsfiled Sussex. They had 8 children: Edward 1769, Mary 1771, Elizabeth 1773, Sarah 1776, Henrietta 1777, Samuel 1779, Walter 1781 and William 1783. Edward 1769 married Mary Waters in 1792 Catsfield Sussex. They had 11 children: Elizabeth 1794, Sarah 1795, Edward 1797, William 1798, Walter 1800, George 1801, James 1804, Robert 1805, Jane 1807, Ann 1809, Eliza 1813. Ann 1809 married William Rudlan Hawkins 1811 (in the UK but not sure where yet). They had 11 children, and migrated to Australia in 1848.
Do any of these names match your information? I don't have a great deal on any of the Quaife's, but am more than happy to pass it on if related to your family.
Do you have any information on the origin/history of the Quaife name?

Hi
I signed your guest book. Where do you live? Was Don Quaife a Canadian and who was his father and Mother? Steve Quaife

Hi Kathy

I found your site on the web, there are a few Quaife families on my tree. The earliest is Samuel Quaife b. 1848 Hawkhurst Kent UK he married Mary Ellen Blunt b. 1847.

There are a number of families from this union, should this information prove of interest to you, please contact me.

Hi Kathy

Thanks for the quick response. I would love the stories etc on the Quaifes when you have time.

Aren't computers fun? I also had a crash a few weeks ago and had to have my hard drive re-formatted. Took me ages to get all my data reloaded. It seems to be an unavoidable problem, as I have heard from several people who have also 'crashed'.

I am happy for you to include the information I sent on your web page. I  am in the process of putting together a family webpage, but not everyone is on yet. I hope to have that done by the end of the year. Then I am going to try and write a little "Bio" or "story" of each person based on the documentation I have and the social conditions of the times. George (my husband) has three convicts in his line and as they are reasonably easy to find information on, this is where I have started. So far I have written only for George's g.g.g.grandfather William Clunes. I have published what I have and update as I add, if you have time take a peek http://www.angelfire.com/folk/familyties0 (Note the 0 is a zero not a capital o) Where do you live? I am in Redcliffe Queensland Australia. About 40minutes drive north of Brisbane. I look forward to hearing from you. If you would like any more information, let me know and i could post it to you. I don't have a lot, but something might help.

Thanks to John Nichols and Kathy Quirarte I received enough info for the time being to post Milo under the "Famous Chickasawians" section on the Chickasaw web page - http://iagenweb.org/chickasaw/famousq.htm . We're fortunate that the article John had also had a picture and although it is a reproduction of a reproduction it came out pretty good. If anyone has any other info I would certainly appreciate it so I can add to the page. I do know that there is a biography on him in something called "Authors of Michigan" and he is on page 54. I've been writing a Michigan Genealogical Society who evidently has a copy of it but can't get anyone to answer. I will keep at it. Hope you enjoy. Sincerely, Mike ps - we still don't have an exact death date. I have one date as 5 September but the newspaper says he died on Tuesday and in 1959 that would be 1 or 8 September.

------------------
I'm about to establish a section on the IAGenWeb Chickasaw County Iowa web site ( http://iagenweb.org/chickasaw/ ) dedicated to people from Chickasaw County who became famous beyond the borders of Iowa. I would like to start it off with one of our own ancestors, namely Milo Milton Quaife, who became a famous historian, author, and editor. He was born in Nashua Iowa on 6 October 1880 and died in Detroit, Michigan on 5 Sep 1959. However, outside of his paents that is about all I can find on him. Per chance, would any of you have an obituary or a biography of Milo that I could post on the web site? Your assistance would be appreciated.
Sincerely, Mike

Hello again, from Michele Quaife Howard, Rochester, Indiana.  I just visited the websight and am sitting here with tears in my eyes.  What a beautiful gift to our family and our heritage.  I will spend more time
reading through the families and the information you've gathered.  Years ago, my Mother, Carolyn Yvonne Quaife, gathered information on the Quaife family history.  I'm not sure what happened to her research but
greatly appreciate the effort you've invested for all of us.

May the Lord continue to bless you and use you as a connecting point for the Quaife family.

Michele Howard

Hi Kathy,

I was really excited to hear from you and will check out the Quaife family websight.  Thanks for the work you did to put it together.  I'm a teacher in Rochester, Indiana.  My father is Jerry Quaife, Chester and
Dorothy Quaife's 2nd to the youngest son.

I grew up visiting my grandparents in northern Minnesota.  They were some of my fondest childhood memories.  We always went to visit Dan and his family too.  It will be great to have a connecting point.

Thank-you so much for the effort of connecting family!

Keep in touch!
Michele Quaife Howard

I'm making a visit to the Records office in Lewes to research the history of this family, my ancestors:

They had 2 daughters: Edith Quaife c1897 in St Leonards, and Nellie Quaife c1901 in Westerham, Kent.

It also shows Walter Quaife a Shoeing Smith age 25, Emily Quaife age 26, Edith Quaife age 4 and Nellie Quaife age 4 months, all living in Westerham, Kent.

In June 1896 in Hastings, Albert Crossman married Emily Quaife.

Kathy:

I find your website fascinating.  I am descended through the Badcocks who married into the Quaife family of Catsfield, Sussex.  One mystery that I have been trying to solve is sort out the two Walter Quaifes.  You have connected the Walter who married Sophia to Samuel (m.  Mary Badcock)'s line.  How did you prove that?  If you like I can explain my position later but have not been able to be sure which Walter was Samuel's son.

Also you are missing a son of Samuel and Mary's as well as some of their descendants.  Are you interested?

Hi Kathy,
Sure you ca post what I wrote onto the website and I look forward to hearing from you some more!  Congrats on the new baby!!!!!!    I want to try to get more info on the our name too!  I have some of the family history but I don't know where we correlate in the family.  I just know that for my whole life I have been told that anyone with the name of Quaife is related to us!  Did you know that the name was given to us by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings?  It was given to 3 brothers if I remember right for the Quaf on the helmet!  Let me know if this is what you know about it.  I also have more info if you would like it!
Coridally,
Cher Quaife Sager

Thank you for emailing this to me.  It is fun to look at all those pics and   read about family.  I am sure many people appreciate what you have created and will be treasured many years from now.  I did find one error, Ron's second wife's last name was Pearson, not Peterson.  Everything else looks GREAT!

I would love to send you more pictures when I round then up.  I knowt I have several of Matt and I with Grandma and Grandpa.  I will get those together and scan them for you.  I also don't know if you are interested in putting my information in there about my family and children and eventually the of the other grandchildren once they marry and have a family, but I would love to be included.  I can send you my children's pictures too and what ever you decide is fine.
Thanks again for all the fun information.

Hi I've enjoyed visiting the Quaife site you have setup. I' Martin Quaife, I live in West Sussex, but was born in Hastings, my dad Ernest William Quaife lives next to Hastings, in Bexhill. My wifw Mary and I have two lovely children Rebecca and Matthew.
I had a sister Jane, unfortunately she died in 1994 of cancer at only 38 years old.
As far as I know my family has always come from the Hastings area.My Grandfather another Ernest William farmed just East of Hastings, his mum, my gran was called Mary.
My Dad's two sisiters both moved to America, one to California, the other to Windsor Onterio Canada.
His brother Bob died in 1980?? something.

Keep the site up, it's of great value to Quaifes round the world.
I have just come accross yout website about the quaife family history in
America and i found it very interesting.

My name is Jason Quaife and i come from Perth Australia, unfortuneatly there

researching the family tree.

Thankyou for a very interesting web site.

Hello, Just went onto your site for interest. Very well presented both with detail and presentation.

I am Alan Edward Quaife (07/18/30-still going). No obvious link with your Quaifes. Our records do back to mid 18th Century but can't go back before that. The mother was a French kitchen maid in Hurstmonceux Castle, England but the father was not on the birth certificate (seems like influence from an important person - do I smell something I should'nt!). Since then only a line of one son per generation, but I have two daughters so the line will die out as far ahead as I can stretch it. My great gradfather served in the Royal Navy 1850s-1860s and wrote a magnificent "Treatise in Naval Gunnery" (all in copper-plate writing with magnificent illustrations and packed full of armament detail) which he used for teaching on board.

My grandfather was a Royal Marine and later a London policeman and my father served in the 1914-1918 war and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He spent his working life in the civil service. I was a dentist and my only military service was as a National Serviceman serving as a dental officer in Germany 1954-1956.

Keep up the good work!

Alan

Dear Kathy,

I was just browsing between my farm management work when I came across you site.  I have been on and off for many years tracing the Quaife family.  I spent 3 weeks with my wife touring Kent for birth places I looked up in the church records.  I found no grave stones but a few local historians supplied me wih quite a lot of info.
My name is David Melville Quaife and I now live after 25 years in Denmark with my second wife Pia, we have two sons Danniel and Martin - both are studying, one in law (Martin the youngest) and The eldest (Danniel) in trade.
When I came to Denmark I bought my two sons, David and Thomas - Thomas unfortunatly is not with us any more as he took his own life 3 years ago, and David is waiting to be a father in about 6 months time.
Before I came to Denmark I was a professional soldier in the British Army and served in N.Ireland two times, Oman, Cuprus, Belize and a few other far flung places - this took 9 years of service!
My father Stanley Melville Quaife was a grocer in London producing the best Hams I ever tasted and blending teas which are not found any more.  His shop was quite famous in the area.  Dad served in the WW II in North Africa and it was here he was captured whilst attacking a Rommel outpost, needless to say he was a member of the 'Desert Rats' attached from the newly founded SOE,  maybe this is why my service time was similar within the same genre?
I never knew my Grandfather, he changed his name from Charles to Frederick falsifying has name and age to fight in the BOAR war in S. Africa where he recieved a bayonet wound in his thigh, this he later died of in 1932!  He was a master carpenter (furniture)
He came from quite a large family originating in Kent mostly. His brother Thomas was a watchmaker and made the chronometers for Alcock and Brown on their flight to USA.  This chronometer was on my grandmothers mantle piece when I was young, unfortunately I do not know what has happened to it - the Quaife's seem to be adventurers and are far flung around the world.
I have a list which I gleaned from the church books dating back to 1180 (William Coifar') which I will be working on for a few years yet.
After a hectic life I now own an organic farm in Denmark where I produce heritage vegetables amongst other things.
My adress is
David Quaife - Jollity Farm
Brydsbjergvej 7
Moseby
4871 Horbelev
Denmark
If you wuld like a more detailed list and a bit more history I can send them to you via this email.
There is one point I would like to make - the christian names through the ages do not seem to change much, the family tree is spotted with Thomas's, William's and so on, except for a Simon Quaife who bucked the system, he had twins at a stage and called them Frances and Francis! (MF) who married later on to a Francis and a Frances!  this took many hours of detective work to find out who was who as I was only working from census/marriage births and deaths papers

I'll sign off now as my field and animals ar waiting.

Yours Aye!
David

Hello

My cousin June O’Brien put me in contact with your web site, she was born June Munn and is descended from Water Quaife via Mary Ann Quaife (number 13 in your list) who married George Munn in Ninfield, Sussex in 1855; the Munn’s lived in Ninfield for a couple of generations further back, and indeed my cousin lived there as a girl until she married and emigrated to Canada. Has she been in contact with you?

Do you know where the details of the marriage of Walter Quaife and Mary Carpenter came from: the only entry in the IGI gives 21 Apr 1761, Ardingly. The data in the IGI is often erroneous, but it is interesting to know where other things come from. Similarly, the birth of Mary Badcock who married Samuel Quaife is in the IGI as 14 Nov 1779, Hooe not 1776 Catsfield as in your Website

Hope to hear from you .

Peter Jackson
